Hybrid SUVs Blog
March 9th, 2010Telling the difference between a gas hog and a more fuel efficient vehicle when your driving a gas only vehicle is usually pretty easy to do. You can tell which ones are better your not only the environment but also which ones are easier on your pocket book. The ones that people usually lean towards as being the best at these things are either the sedans or compact cars. That has all changed since the new hybrid SUV’s hit the market along with the compact cars and sedans. It’s not so easy anymore to choose which is better for the environment and your pocket book. Come with me as we take a sneak peak at some of the various differences that might be obvious to the naked eye and some that are not so obvious between the SUV hybrids and the compact or sedan hybrids that you should know before you take the leap and purchase a new hybrid.
This SUV gives a less noisy ride like the other Hybrid cars combined with 4 wheel drive and a higher height ride. This SUV is powered by new version of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive. Therefore, the SUVs engine is 3.3 liter V6 engine combined with a high torque electric drive motor generator. This new motor/generator operates at a high speed and gives more power to the engine. This combines with the engine produces power up to 3500 pounds. Due to this the Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUV is rated as SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle).
Toyota and Lexus are providers of hybrid SUVs. Honda provides the mild hybrids. These are the ones that rely mainly on the gas engine while using a small electric motor or generator to supplement it. Toyota Prius and Ford Escape Hybrid are examples of strong hybrids which have a larger role ascribed for the electric motor.
The pathway of energy for the Hybrid SUVs can vary to wide extents. This depends upon various conditions and demands of the driver. Usually it is the electric motor that provides most of the momentum while driving at lower speeds despite the engine revving. The excessive power from the engine is absorbed by the smaller motor or generator and then routed back to the main motor to be used either for providing the energy to move the car or for charging the battery pack.
The Toyota Hilander manages 20 miles per gallon on EPA tests, which makes it one of the more high mpg SUVs available right now. Its fuel efficiency score is better than the earlier V-6 Hilander that did around 19 mpg. The newer Hilander has the same V6, 27 horsepower engine as does the Toyota Camry and is pleasingly silent, particularly at highway speeds. The Hyundai Veracruz Limited AWD is a powerful SUV challenger with its potent 260 horsepower, 3.8 liter, 24 valve V6 engine. Most common SUVs have just a 3.6 liter engine. That engine in the Veracruz Limited AWD powers up the hills with its 257 lb-ft torque, a better result than Hyundai’s earlier model.s It gets you 15 mpg in city traffic, acording to EPA figures, and 22 mpg on the highway. This makes the Hyundai Veracruz one of the most fuel-efficient cars on the US market.
If you still want to drive an SUV, but not worry about the potential of filing for bankruptcy due to expensive fueling, then consider one of the Hybrid SUVs and trucks on the market. Your wallet will thank you.
